Antisèche: How do you explain Bitcoin to your family over the holidays?

Already afraid of the upcoming discussions about Bitcoin during your family meals?

Don’t panic, we’ve prepared a cheat sheet for you to be glued!

Cheat sheet: How to explain Bitcoin Future to your family during the holidays?

How do you explain Bitcoin to your family?

You are a passionate pro-crypto and have revealed to your family that you bought Bitcoin. Big mistake! Between the turkey and the cheese, your uncle explains to you that cryptomoney is based on wind. And your grandmother worries about what she thinks is a scam. Breathe, and be an educator: it’s a matter of explaining to them what it is!

Your uncle: „Anyway, the price of Bitcoin is not based on anything“.

Look, uncle, you may not be able to feel your Bitcoins the way you feel your bills at the bank, but that doesn’t mean it’s based on wind. And then your euros, they’re also rather digital: in Europe, 86% of the funds don’t exist in a tangible way, but only in the banks‘ networks. So to touch it, we’ll come back.

You know, uncle, the value of the euro is basically only determined by the trust that we give it. And it’s a little bit the same for Bitcoin. It is based on a solid and very secure protocol, and it is this trust that allows it to exist. The proof is that more and more major companies are choosing to buy it. And that’s more proof that Bitcoin is solid, isn’t it?

Your sister: „It’s still more convenient to use PayPal or my bank! »

That’s because the last time you tried to use Bitcoin was when I was still playing Legos! There are now a lot of services that bridge the gap between traditional finance and Bitcoin. If you walk around Paris, you’ll see that there are now several Bitcoin distributors. And there are even Visa payment cards that allow you to spend your Bitcoin with a credit card. Not to mention all the mobile wallets that have really simplified the way we use our cryptomoney.

And then, sister, you forget that Bitcoin is interesting because it works outside of traditional financial systems. Your bank is very convenient, but have you ever tried to withdraw several thousand euros without warning? With Bitcoin, you have total freedom over your funds, and no one can confiscate them from you.

You know grandma, Bitcoin has been around for ten years now. And so far, it’s pretty much proven its strength. In 2013, it was worth around 100 dollars. And this year, it was close to $20,000 again. Granted, there are falls, and they are sometimes massive, but overall the price of Bitcoin has continued to rise. Between December 2019 and December 2020, the price gained +147%. So if I had given you some last Christmas, you would have made a nice profit!

So yes, cryptomoney markets are more volatile than others, but that doesn’t mean we’re doing anything. Above all, you never invest all your money in cryptomoney! Even the billionaire Michael Novogratz advises to invest only 5% of his portfolio in Bitcoin. So you see, I’m not going to lose everything…

Your cousin: „Isn’t it used on the Darknet, your Bitcoin? »

Yes cousin, as the media likes to remind us, Bitcoin and cryptomoney are sometimes used on the Darknet. But still fortunate! This means that they find their place as a reliable currency. The majority of illegal payments in France are made in euros. In your opinion, does that mean that the euro should be banned?

Yes, I know, cryptomoney is difficult to trace. But neither can cash, and we don’t hear you criticizing payments with banknotes, do we? In fact, regulators and governments like to say that cryptomoney is used by criminals, but it’s mostly a way to discredit these alternative payment networks that they are very worried about. So it’s more of a sign that cryptomoney works!

Wekelijkse instroom in Bitcoin-producten

Wekelijkse uitstromen in Goud dalen…

CVM innovates is the first regulator in Brazil to join the UN global pact to fight corruption

CVM innovates is the first regulator in Brazil to join the UN global pact to fight corruptionNOTÍCIAS

The Brazilian Securities Commission, CVM, has announced the entry of the Municipality into the Brazil Bitcoin Future Network of the Global Compact, an initiative of the United Nations (UN).

The network focuses on mobilizing the business community in the adoption and promotion, in its business practices, of Ten Principles universally accepted in the areas of human rights, labor, environment and anticorruption.

Thus, with the creation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDOs), the Global Compact also has the mission of engaging the private sector in this new agenda.

„It is a satisfaction to be able to combine this announcement with the celebration of the 44th anniversary of the CVM, at which time we propose a deepening of discussions on socio-environmental issues. Our entry into the Global Compact demonstrates the regulator’s commitment to this agenda and the continuous effort to promote market development on an increasingly solid and transparent basis,“ said Marcelo Barbosa, President of CVM

According to Marcelo Barbosa, the CVM is the first Brazilian regulator to be admitted to the Global Pact and will have tools that will contribute to broaden the involvement of the municipality with sustainability issues and discussions in the area.

According to the CVM, this will also enable the municipality to participate in local and international programs.

„The actions will be conducted effectively, reinforcing our commitment as a regulator and supporting the 10 universal principles emphasized by the Pact in relation to human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption,“ he commented.

There are already more than 16,000 participants in the initiative, in almost 170 countries, with more than 1,100 members in Brazil (the fastest growing local network in 2020).

Fighting corruption

Recently in an article published on the O Globo newspaper portal, David Gibbin, CEO of financial market software developer Investtools, argues that blockchain technology is the key to „freeing Brazil from political and institutional chaos“ and can help the country in the goals of the Global Compact to fight corruption.

„In the current political scenario, where news about corruption and money laundering is increasingly frequent, the population’s longing for tools of transparency in governments is inevitable. Although a solution to the control of public spending seems utopian, given the scale of the problem in Brazil, it exists and is in a technology known to many, but really understood by few: the blockchain“.

The principles of blockchain, writes Gibbin, with all computers on the network working together and having to validate transactions, „generate a new and unprecedented standard of security,“ and the immutability of the technology also makes fraud almost impossible.

In the control of public spending in blockchain, all movement is compulsorily registered and traceable by any actor of the network, that is, the data is public.

According to him, the blockchain tends to be increasingly exploited as a tool to protect democracy:

„Technology takes away from government and other corruptible entities the roles of providers and issuers of an increasingly fragile „truth“.

China: the world’s 4th largest mining hub abruptly stops

In the dark. In China, the world’s fourth largest mining hub has just seen its electricity supply cut. Did this have an influence on Bitcoin’s hashrate (BTC)? And what could this say for Chinese mining?

China cuts power to Yunnan mining farms

The news was reported yesterday by several local media. It seems that the government has decided to stop providing electricity to mining farms , according to information from Wu Blockchain:

“Several miners explained to Wu that in Baoshan, Yunnan, where cryptocurrency mines are located, a ban was put in place on November 30. She asks power stations to stop providing energy to the miners. Yunnan is China’s third largest mining hub, after Sichuan and Xinjiang. “

As the local media point out, this power cut should not necessarily be interpreted as a comprehensive policy on the part of China. The government changes its attitude regularly with regard to electricity suppliers. Wu Blockchain explains that this is a change driven by economic interests , not political pressure.

Bitcoin’s hashrate on the decline

Still, the average hashrate of the Bitcoin network fell yesterday, if Bitcoin Legacy data is to be believed. However, it seems that it has already started to rise again:

The news is certainly not entirely surprising: the province of Yunnan has already shown some hostility towards Bitcoin miners settled in the region. In June, 64 mining farms had to close their doors because they did not have the government’s sesame. However, it is still the 4th largest mining hub in the world, behind Inner Mongolia.

Hostility from the Yunnan government does not yet threaten China’s mining hegemony – the country still holds 65% of Bitcoin’s hashrate . But the difficulties experienced by local miners could allow new regions to emerge in the years to come.
